Quebec City, Qc, November 24, 2015  – NuRAN Wireless Inc. (CSE:NUR)  (“Nuran” or the “Company”) today announced that World Telecom Labs (WTL) (‘WTL”) of Belgium is using its low-power (54W) and low-OPEX GSM base stations to bring voice connectivity to remote rural villages close to Lake Tanganyika in the Katavi Region of Tanzania.

NuRAN’s GSM LiteCell was designed specifically for use in rural and low-density, lower ARPU (average revenue per user) urban areas. The GSM LiteCell has already been deployed in other parts of Africa as well as throughout the world where it has given rural communities network coverage for the very first time at a extremely low cost.

It is also being trialled by a number of operators and community organizations in Africa which want to provide voice coverage to villages in rural areas not currently covered by any kind of voice or data network and also in urban areas where there are still opportunities to provide an affordable service to lower ARPU customers in an community based effort.

Wireless ISPs (internet service providers) providing data in rural areas in Africa, are also examining the GSM LiteCell so that they can add reliable voice service to their product portfolio.

The Tanzania project is financed by the Universal Communications Service Access Fund (UCSAF) as part of a US$9.6 million investment to improve connectivity in Tanzania.

Award winning World Telecom Labs has a strong reputation for providing solutions, which are innovative, practical and cost-effective to operators in more than 32 countries across Africa as well as in the Middle East, Asia and South America.

For the Tanzanian network, the company has incorporated NuRAN’s GSM LiteCell into its Vivada system (Village Voice and Data) which was developed to provide operators both large and small with a cost-effective, quick to deploy and sustainable system for rural GSM and data connectivity.

WTL’s Managing Director Leigh Smith said “We evaluated a number of rural GSM base stations and found that Nuran’s was the ideal fit for the Tanzanian network as it is extremely low-power. The company is clearly innovative and I would expect a strong demand for its products in Africa.”

Francis Letourneau, VP Sales & Marketing at NuRAN, said “We are making tremendous progress with our rural offering as demonstrated through our strong pipeline of leads and trials throughout the world.”

NuRAN Wireless’ GSM LiteCell includes the following features:

  • Requires just 54W and can be powered by solar, grid electricity or generators
  • Contains two TRX which enable 30 simultaneous calls
  • A 10 kilometer radius for each GSM LiteCell
  • An all-IP interface makes it easy to connect to any type of backhaul, including DSL, microwave, and satellite
  • On-site BSC and advanced compression features reduce the amount of traffic exchanged on the backhaul and increase tolerance to latency
  • The compact size and simplicity of the LiteCell makes it possible for a single, untrained person to perform the site installation. Ongoing maintenance is minimal.
